Flavor of The Week: Lord Toph

While perusing the world of Youtube I came across a video of interest. Namely because its a black guy doing goth alt. music. *sigh* So I enthusiastically click on the thumbnail and was disappointed. The song isn't the worst part about it-its the terrible unimaginative music video and the cheesiness almost makes it seem like some strange joke/parody of a goth song.

However, I do give him kudos for trying after reading some of comments (like one saying 'wtf. just go rap.' or something similar which pissed me off...clearly we haven't gotten pretty far in contradiction to the Afropunk post). It's clear that the video was low budget and the art director clearly thought he was doing something innovative.

Side note:The shoes the girl is wearing in the vid are really fab though.

Needless to say, I decided to rename this one the sour flavor of the week because it left a bitter taste in my mouth. I think sometimes black folks sort of exaggerated the dark quality of this type of music when they go into it (ex. Wicked Wisdom) but hell, they are paving the way for the rest of us.
Video for 'Mesmerized':

Yay or Nay?I want your opinion. Comment Please.

Mmmm, I remember this being posted a few months ago on a goth board. I was excited at first, but in the end I was left unimpressed. I am reminded of a teenage boy's lust and it's a turn off. :< Better luck next time to him.

Ah, and on said board they said his music wasn't goth at all but "eh" is all I have to say to that.

The song is not my thing, but I respect this guy for doing something different.

Well! I would have to COMPLETELY disagree! I Love the melodic sound of his music, the unique sound and look. The more he comes out with the more hooked I become, I first heard about him when this video came out "Mesmerized" But since then, his music and videos amaze me, the more I listen, the ore hooked I get! It is strange, like a child that can watch the same movie over and over and over! I really enjoyed his newest vids, Feak of natvre and Vnbelievable. I Love the true meaning/execution of "Goth" in the Vnbelievable.
I later saw him on Vampire Freaks. Turns out they rate him as the #4 top goth band! I think he is Hot, sexy, and a damn good musician, I would surrender to him in a second!

I agree with "anonymous". His music and videos are quite good. Everybody wants to hate on people, and why does it really matter that he or you are black? my god! The F'n shit rawks, and that's the point. I will say he has better vids that the one mentioned here. but when you listen to his music, the lyrics are succumbing. I find it rude that you would call it a joke! I bet everybody was talking shit about plenty of other musicians before they hit major networks! You watch, this guy has everything it takes to knock you and your momma off your rockers!
"Lord Toph Lord Toph Lord Toph"
Say his name 3 times and watch him appear right before your blind eyes!

One more thing....I guess this is what we can expect from a 17 yr old girl with no vision, somebody who only sees in black or white.

agrees with Anonymous why does it have to do with race .. why does everything come down to the race card...i love the music and i have it on my profile.. i am mesmerized by the Song Mesmerized...
Whoa, nelly. I said I want your opinion-I didn't want to be bashed for giving my own.

I could care less regardless if you agree or not but saying that I have no vision-from a stranger that perused this blog lightly w/out even knowing me is uncalled for and immature. Especially when I said I respected him.

Obviously-if you can't understand why I made a blog like this then perhaps you shouldn't comment and/or read it. Thanks anyway.

@THE BLACK GIRL....WHERE DID IT SAY "YOU RESPECTED HIM"???
Maybe that text didn't make it in the final cut, someplace between "joke video" and "sour flavor of the week" ? Or the fact the "BLACK FOLK" exaggerate the dark quality of this type of music. Seems the only person here doing the "bashing" is YOU. maybe you should look into LORD TOPH , listen to his music and see he holds more truth in the music itself than that of a lot of other "goth" bands. Right, we don't know you, and you don't know him it seems. But that is why you wrote this blog, for us to read and comment. No disrespect, just a wake up call. You cannot appreciate that that you do not offer acceptance in. Have you seen his TOP VIDEOS on VampireFreaks.com? Have you googled him? Have you listened to his other music on myspace or playlist? Just wondering....It seems you have such a HUGE opinion, without knowing anything about him or his music. Kinda like the "commenter" that says you have no vision...huh?
'I give him Kudos' is a sort of Euphemism for respect.
I suppose I'm not angry at you-I'm just frustrated at your limited perspective. Bashing would saying that he is a talentless twit-surely not what I said which is an opinion of an 'untroo fan' which to me would mean my opinion doesn't matter at all and wouldn't upset you so. I decided to give him a chance so I looked up some lyrics/songs of his.
Now I actually feel validated by bashing him. He has about the lyrical depth of a tomato. (I looked at the lyrics of Wicked, Madness, and Finger all erotic and contrived)If I wanted real goth music I'd listen to Sopor Aeturnis and The Ensemble of Shadows or Christian Death. So now, yes, I will wholeheartedly bash him now that I really see what mall goth quality his music is. And its not because he is black but because its terrible music.
Sorry to give my opinion-I hope you can take it.

I think everyones entitled to their own opinion and should not be bashed for not liking something. Grow up and get over the fact that not everyone has the same likes and dislikes...
HAHAHAHAH LMFAO! Your black...hating on black. ! Seems you have your pre-judged opinion already about black people in this type of music. And "Sopor"? lmfao, please...all he/she is ...is over marketed. You should all just shut up, and listen to your music. stop "bloggin" about all the shit you don't like. SAVE THE DRAMA FOR YOUR MAMA! Be Cool...stay in school! God knows you need it! Come down Oh Lord and strike some education into these poor minds. lmao!

wow. i am not sure what race has to do with this. he could be purple for all i care. music is music. its from the heart and soul. get off the race card. if you like it you like it if you dont then you dont yet dont bring the color of some one's skin in this. we all breath the same air and bleed red so get with the times

Then be part of the solution, seems you are only carrying out what you hate.
You talk about what everybody else is doing, sounds like you don't agree with it, so therefore you feel it necessary to carry out what you have been prgrammed to do, just the same? Hmmmm. Seems you contribute to the problems of society, instead of really making a difference.
I personally am a fan of the music of Lord Toph, he inspires me and my open mind. Race doesn't play a role in it.

I am a fan! He is hott, He is Sexy, and the music is off the hook! :D

To quote you, you did say "Yay or Nay?I want your opinion. Comment Please."
Like I said before-'I want your opinion'-doesn't mean bash me for saying that I think his music is crap. I want your opinion means something like, 'Well, I disagree with you. Here is bleep and bleep songs/videos that I think you should hear that might change your opinion on him'. I was referring to people's opinion on HIM and not my own. My opinion shouldn't matter since I had only heard that one song so I'm perplexed as to why I'm getting so many indignant comments.
This is my final comment on the issue.

Well I'll be damned. People, just because BGiHM isn't a fan of Lord Toph is no detriment to him, his music, or his future works. She took into account his budget, current skill level, and determination. After all that, she made the choice to not enjoy his music just as other have made the choice to like it. Is that a crime?

And giving one's opinion is not the same as taking the opportunity to be immature or mirror the disrespect you believe Toph is being given.

The only thing I can respectfully disagree with is when BGiHM said, "I think sometimes black folks sort of exaggerated the dark quality of this type of music when they go into it (ex. Wicked Wisdom) but hell, they are paving the way for the rest of us." Namely because I don't see exaggeration (debatable) as a negative style, especially given the strong black influence at the conception of all of these genres. :) But again, it's a matter of respectfully disagreeing with someone, I'm not going to bash her head into the wall for an opinion I don't see eye to eye with.
@Grotesque- I think I understand what your saying. My comment on the exaggeration bit is debatable since most music in general has black influence-is that what you meant? I can understand that.
The moment I typed that part I knew I might get some raised eyebrows...hmmm...maybe I'll expand on that in a later post. Great comment.
Esque said…
That is part of what I meant, yes. The other part of what I meant is that each genre's generation was founded as an exaggeration of it's previous incarnation. With this in mind, and exaggerating modern artists do could influence and redefine what we consider metal, rock, etc. so I don't consider it a negative or unnecessary attribute in an artist.

you mentioned Wicked Wisdom at the end, and I just had to say, Wicked Wisdom sucks donkey balz, and so does Otep, I guess she could've done something interesting with that little project, but instead tried really hard to make it "real" as in real generic.
I'm looking forward to Celine Dion's new Pornogrind band though.

I would have to say nay on this one. As you I expected something completely different. Not what we want to hear when the word Goth is involved. Bad choice for this one.
